Tuscany 1 & 2 were composed in the vineyards of Tuscany whilst motorcycling round Italy with a friend on the trail of Piero della Francesca. Piero della Francesca is my favourite Renaissance painter of all time. His paintings have a wonderful sense of calm and eternal morning air about them. We sought out his murals, traversing steep mountain tracks to tiny village churches as well as visiting those more well known pieces in museums and cathedrals. There wasn’t a lot of time to paint but the Tuscan watercolours are just a taste of the vineyards and olive groves that we passed on our journey in 1993. Up to this point I’d only seen Piero della Francesca’s painting in reproduction and the Baptism of Christ in the National Gallery London.
